Question:

I have a globe locust tree...it is HUGE. I am starting to get branches breaking because it is so full and sometimes the wind aids in that. Is this a tree that can be pruned and how do you suggest doing so? I am thinking of calling a professional to do it this year in the fall, but wouldn't mind doing it myself if I got the right advice...what do you suggest?

Answer:

On shade trees, you need to prune any crossing branches, branches that have a narrow crotch, broken branches, and/or dead branches. There are some really good resources and instruction papers that you can pick up at the extension office that show you where is the right place to prune and describes the basics of pruning.
