Question:

We have a lot of clay soil, thick and heavy and water puddles in it. We continue to add organic matter both Fall and Spring. Would granular sand, gypsum or lime, improve clay soil in this area? If so, at what rate?

Answer:

For clay soil, you would be best adding a soil pep, bark compost, or a Nutri-mulch. You want to add a product that has large particles that will help to break up the fine particles of clay. You will want to put 2-3" on top of the soil if you have heavy clay and work or till it into the soil.

Stay away from sand, for the mixture of sand and clay becomes a very hard substance that water can not penetrate.
