Full sun to part sun. Height 4', 6' wide. Heavily branched, upright spreading growth. Early pink blossoms appear before the leaves. Dwarf shrub. Deciduous. Iron chlorosis is a problem.

Triloba (Prunus triloba 'Multiplex')

Full sun to part sun. Slow growing. Height 8-10', 8-10' wide. Double, 1” wide, pink flowers in early spring. Deciduous. Small tree or large shrub. Iron chlorosis is not a problem for this variety.

AZALEA (Rhododendron)

Golden Lights (Rhododendron 'Golden Lights')

Full sun to part sun. Height 4-5', 4-5' wide. Bright yellow flowers bloom in the spring before foilage. Foilage is narrow and green. Deciduous. Showy fall foliage. Likes acidic soils.

Mandarin Lights (Rhododendron 'Mandarin Lights')

Full to part sun. Height 4-5', 4-5' wide. Upright, rounded form. Bright mandarin orange blossoms in early spring. Narrow green foliage becomes showy in the fall. Deciduous. Likes acidic soils.

Northern Lights (Rhododendron 'Northern Lights')

Full to part sun. Height 4-5', 4-5' wide. Upright, rounded form. Creamy white with yellow flowers in early spring. Narrow green leaves turn burgundy in fall. Deciduous. Likes acidic soils.

Full to part sun. Height 2-3', 2-3' wide. Dwarf, compact, rounded shape. Soft, lilac flowers in early spring. Narrow green foliage becomes showy in the fall. Deciduous. Likes acidic soils.

BAMBOO

Golden Bamboo (Phyllostachys aurea)

Height to 10'. Upright form. Dense branches of dark green foliage on stiff, erect polished stems of brilliant yellow. Good hedge or screen. Evergreen. Marginal in our area.

Yellow Groove (Phylostachys aureosulcata)

Height 15-25'. Upright, vertical growth. Slender young stems are green with a pronounced yellow grove found on opposite sides of the cane between internodes. Soft green leaves. More open habit than the Golden Bamboo. Evergreen. Marginal in our area.

BARBERRY (Berberis)

Crimson Pygmy (Berberis thunbergii 'Crimson Pygmy')

Full to part sun. Height 18-24", 30" wide. Select miniature form. Mature leaves are a bronzy bright red. New leaves bright red. Must have sun to develop color. Deciduous.

Golden Nugget (Berberis thungergii 'Golden Nugget')

Full to part sun. Height 12", 15" wide. Mounding habit. Unique bright golden-yellow color. Orange autumn color. Foliage does not burn. Has been tested and certified rust resistant. Adds a rich appearance to any landscape. Deciduous.

Helmond Pillar (Berberis

Full sun to part sun. Height 4', 1 1/2' wide. Upright columnar form. Foliage is dark red-purple and a bit smaller than 'Crimson Pygmy'. Glossy, bright red berries form in the fall and often persist well into winter. Deciduous.

Rose Glow (Berberis thunbergii 'Rose Glow')

Full to part sun. Height 5-6'. New growth is variegated pink becoming rose-red at maturity. Needs enough sun to develop good color. Deciduous.

Royal Burgundy (Berberis thunbergii 'Royal Burgundy')

Full to part sun. Height 2', 3' wide. A low, mounding shrub. Spring foliage is covered with a beautiful velvet. The small, velvety leaf holds its deep burgundy color throughout the hot summer. Turns to showy black red in fall. Similar to Crimson Pigmy, but has better color and is smaller. Deciduous.

Sunsation (Berberis thunbergii 'Monry'

Best in full sun. Slow growing. Height 3-4', 3-4' wide. Compact, dwarf form. Golden foliage with an orange cast most of the season. Deciduous.

William Penn (Berberis x gladwynensis)

Full to part sun. Height 4', 4-6' wide. Dwarf form. Bright yellow flowers. Green leaves become bronze in fall. Evergreen.

BEAUTYBERRY (Callicarpa)

Profusion Japanese (Callicarpa bodinieri 'Profusion')

Plant in sun to part sun. Height 4-6', 4-6' wide. Light pink blossoms followed by metallic purple berries that last into the fall. Needs average water. Deciduous.

BEAUTY BUSH (Kolkwitzia)

Beauty Bush (Kolkwitzia amabilis)

Sun to shade. Height 6-8', 6-8' wide. Shape is upright arching. Pale pink bell shaped flowers in early June followed by brown hairy seeds that remain into the winter.  Foliage is dark green turning reddish in the fall. Gray-brown bark on older stems exfoliates to give winter interest. Grows anywhere and prospers in dry, sandy, poor soil. Deciduous.

BLUE BEARD (Caryopteris)

It is suggested that this plant be cut back nearly to the ground in spring.

Full sun. Height 3-4', 3-4' wide. Attractive compact, mounding shrub. Fragrant powder blue blooms. Long blooming season. Creates a wonderful border for perennial beds, or use along walks and entryways. Deciduous.

Full to part sun. Height 2-3', 2-3 wide. Compact form. Deep purple-blue flowers in late summer. Silver foliage. Deciduous.

BOXWOOD (Buxus)

Green Beauty (Buxus microphylla japonica 'Green Beauty')

Full sun to shade. Height 4-6', 4-6' wide. Holds deep green color in coldest weather and summer heat. Hardier than common Japanese boxwood. Evergreen. Good for shearing and shaping.

Green Mountain (Buxus hybrid 'Green Mountain')

Sun to Shade. Height 5', 3' wide. Upright cone shape. Tight branches with dark green leaves that retain coloring through winter. Considered somewhat fast growing when young compared to other types. Evergreen. Good hedge.

Green Velvet (Buxus 'Green Velvet')

Sun to shade. Height 2-4', 2-4' wide. Broad mounding form. Glossy dark green leaves cover the tight branches. A cross of sempervirens and microphylla boxwoods. Evergreen. Good for shearing and hedges.

True Dwarf (Buxus sempervirens 'Suffruticosa')

Sun to shade. Slower growing than others. Height to 4'. Small leaves, dense form and texture. Grows to 4', but generally clipped lower. Evergreen. Can be shaped. Good as a hedge.

Variegated English (Buxus sempervirens 'Variegata')

Part sun to shade. Slow growth. Height 5-6', 5-6' wide. Great hedge for formal gardens. Small leaves are rich deep green edged in creamy margins. Great for shearing and for topiary  use. Can be used as a cover-up for foundations and as screening or boundary hedge. Evergreen.

Winter Gem (Buxus microphylla asiatic 'WINTER GEM')

Sun to shade. Height 4', 3' spread. Used as a clipped hedge or border.  Hardy-variety holds green color through winter. Evergreen.

Slow growing. Height 10-12' tall, 6-8' wide. Fern-like, linear, irregularly scalloped leaves. Deciduous.

Columnar Buckthorn (Rhamnus frangula 'Columnaris')

Slow growing. Height 12-15', 4-5' wide. Dark, glossy green leaves turn golden yellow in fall. Attractive berries appear throughout the summer. Deciduous. Also known as Tallhedge.

Full to part sun. Height 3-5', 5-6' wide. Rounded form. Small greenish flowers in April-May. Dense glossy leafed shrub suitable for hedges in open or shady area. Foliage is dense, glossy green. Very responsive to shearing.

DAPHNE (Daphne)

Carol Mackie (Daphne x burkwoodii 'Carol Mackie')

Part shade best. Height 2-3', 3-4' wide. Mounding shrub. Clusters of fragrant pink flowers in May. Foliage is green with a cream colored margin. Best in cool, well drained soil.

Rock (Daphne cneorum)

Part shade best. Height 1', 3' wide. A low spreading evergreen plant with clusters of delightfully fragrant, tiny pink spring flowers that can be smelled from 10-20' away. Great for rock gardens.

Ruby Glow(Daphne cneorum 'Ruby Glow')

Part shade. Height 1', 3' wide. Low Spreading Shrub.  Fragrant flowers appear April  through June, often flowering again in late summer. Transplant as a container plant, cut paper mache pot off when in hole. Prefers well drained, moist soil.

Part shade. Height 2-3', 4-5' wide. Mounded form. Green, semi-evergreen foliage. Covered with clusters of fragrant pink flowers in May. Best in cool, well drainged soils.

Dwarf Nikko Slender (Deutzia gracilis 'Nikko')

Sun to part sun. Height 2', 5' wide. Extremely dwarf shrub with arching branches. Showy cover of double white blooms in spring. Bright green leaves display deep burgundy fall color. Deciduous.

Pink-a-Boo (Deutzia hybrida Pink-a-Boo 'Monzia')

Sun to part sun. Height 6-8', 6' wide. Upright multi-stemmed form. Pink flowered form of the species, showy in spring. Deep green foliage. Deciduous.

DOGWOOD (Cornus)

Most of the Dogwood bushes are good in wet areas. They are a very versatile Shrub.

Sun to part shade. Height 6-8'. Green leaves turn red in fall. White flowers in spring followed by white or bluish berries. Exceptionally bright red bark in the winter. Very Hardy. Deciduous. Good for wet areas. Good as a hedge.

Full to part sun. Height 5-6', 8-9' wide. Compact, rounded form. Variegated green and white foliage in summer, with red twigs in winter. Easier to contain than “Variegated”. Deciduous.

Dwarf Red Tipped (Cornus pumila)

Sun to part shade. Height 3', 3-4' spread. Irregular, spreading form. Green foliage. Bright crimson new stems. Ideal for smaller spaces. Deciduous.

Insanti Red Twig (Cornus sericea 'Isanti Red-osier')

Sun to shade. Height 6-10', 6-10' wide. Dogwood with brilliant show of red fall color and bright red winter twigs. Grows rapidly. Small creamy white flowers in 2” wide clusters. White to bluish white fruit. Deciduous. Good for wet areas. Good as a hedge.

Kelsey's Dwarf (Cornus stolonifera 'Kelseyii')

Sun to part shade. Height 3', 3' wide. Compact form. Dark green leaves that turn red or orange in autumn. White flowers in late spring followed by white fruit. Red-tipped, yellow-green winter shoots. Deciduous. Good for wet areas.

Mottled Tartarian (Cornus alba 'Gouchaulti')

Sun to part sun. Height 6-10', 3-7' wide. Green leaf with yellowish white border mottled with pink during the season. Upright red stems. Blue tinged with white fruit. Good for wet areas. Good as a hedge.

Pagoda (Cornus alternifolia)

Sun to shade. Height 15'. Small clusters of creamy flowers in spring. Light green leaves turn red in fall. Blue black fruit. Deciduous. Shrub or small tree. Good for wet areas.

Siberian (Cornus alba 'Sibirica')

Sun to part shade. Height 7', 5' wide. Multi-stemmed, vase shape. Yellowish-white flowers followed by blue fruit. Rounded dark green foliage. Current year's growth features coral-red stems. Deciduous. Good for wet areas or as a hedge.

Variegated Red Twig (Cornus alba 'Elegantissima')

Sun to part sun. Height 6', 4-6' wide. White flowers borne in spring, white tinged with blue berries following. Green leaves have a white border. Leaves turn red or orange in fall. Red branches in the winter. Deciduous. Good for wet areas or as a hedge.

Yellow Twig (Cornus sericea 'Flaviramea' )

Sun to part sun. Height 6-8', 7-9' wide. Dense form. White flwoers in spring followed by white fruit. Bright yellow branches make this shrub valuable in landscaping. Excellent winter effect. Deciduous. Good for wet areas or as a hedge.

Shade to part shade. Height 4-6', 4-6' wide. Rounded form. In summer flat heads of blue flowers appear, if soil is kept acidic. Deciduous. For best color, soils need to be acidified in our area.

Blushing Bride (Hydarngea macrophylla 'Blushing Bride')

Shade to part shade. Height 4', 4' wide. Rounded form. The flowers are pure white, maturing to a blush pink or blue, depending upon your soil acidity. Good repeat bloomer. It has glossy, deep green foliage. Deciduous. For best color, soils need to be acidified in our area.

Buttons 'n Bows (Hydrangea macrophylla 'Sensation')

Shade to part shade. Height 3-4', 3-4' wide. Compact growth. Deep pink flowers have contrasting white margins surrounding each petal. Flower heads can reach 4-6” across. Cool weather turns the foliage a light burgundy shade. Deciduous. Needs soil acidifier in our area.

Endless Summer (Hydrangea macrophylla 'Endless Summer')

Shade to part shade. Height 4-5', 4-5' wide. Rounded form. Clear pink blooms in alkaline soils and blue blooms in acid soils. Blooms on both old and new wood for repeat-blooming all summer long. More hardy than other types. Deciduous.

European Cranberry Bush (Viburnum opulus)

Sun to part sun. Height 8-12'', 10-15' wide. Upright growth. Flowers in June, followed by showy red fruit from August into winter. Fall color varies from shades of yellow-red to reddish purple. Tolerant of many soil types. Great for mass plantings, hedges and screens. Deciduous.

Korean Spice (Viburnum carlesii)

Full to part sun. Height 4-6', 4-6' wide. Blooms in mid-spring with softball sized clusters of waxy pink flowers that fade to white. Flowers have a potent, spicy fragrance. Bright red bunches of berries appear in late summer, maturing to black in fall. Leaves turn bright red and rich burgundy in fall. Deciduous.

Onodaga (Viburnum sargentil 'Onodaga')

Sun to part sun. Height 6-8', 6-8' wide. Flowers are white tinged with purple and the fruit is red. Foliage emerges a velvety maroon and matures to deep green with a tinge of purple. A nice plant for a screen or shrub border. Deciduous.

Pink Beauty Doublefile (Viburnum plicatum 'Pink Beauty')

Sun to part sun. Height 5-8', 4-6' wide. Spring flowers open white but soon turn a beautiful shade of pink.  Red fruit later in the season procedes the nice reddish-purple fall color. Deciduous.

Sun to part shade. Height 6', 6' wide. Rounded form. Among the showiest of its kind, this shrub may bloom continuously throughout the season in snow white blossoms.  Produces an abundance of bright red berries by late summer. Deciduous.

CLEMATIS

These are climbing vines with beautiful flowers in a rich variety of hues. This vine that grow around a lamp posts, on walls, or on fences. Grows in full or partial sun with roots shaded. Deciduous. Flowers come in a variety of colors, sizes and bloom times.

JACKMANII

The large flowers are deep violet purple with a reddish tinge. Bloom from July to October. Grows 8-12'.

NELLY MOSER

Large pinkish petals with a dark pink bar. Reddish purple stamen. Blooms are profusely borne in May and June and again in July-September. It doesn’t like extremely hot, sunny areas, best planted on a north wall or in a shady position to prevent bleaching. Grows 8-12'.

NIOBE

Velvety, deep ruby petals with golden stamens. Just after opening blooms appear almost black. Very free-flowering. Bloom in June, and again August-September. Grows 8-12'.
