Question:

I have just moved in to a home with mature landscaping but no fruit trees. I would like to plant as many fruit and nut trees as I can. Is there any advantage to planting them in the fall or will spring planting be just as good?

Answer:

The advantage of the fall is that the tree roots will be able to establish themselves more fully before the summer hits. Summer tends to be the hardest season on trees so the more established the tree is the better. The disadvantage in the fall is that many places have sold the most popular kinds of fruit trees so you don't have as good of a selection.
